Rosetta stone is good but expensive. I speak five languages and I speak spanish the best out of all of those.. I have also taught spanish, so i would recomment if you want to do courses either Berlitz or Inlingua because they have quick immersion classes. If you don’t want to spend that much money then purchase Berlitz cds/dvds at a bookstore.. it’s a good fast program and even is used by the U.S. Dept of State to train foreign service officers.

Try purchasing a small book of phrases that comes with a Cd if you just need to get by for a quick trip.. but definitely get something with cds so you ahve the audio.

I haven’t used it myself, but I’ve been checking out Rosetta Stone, too. It looks very good.

At the end of their program, you won’t have all the language skills that might be needed for college requirements (if your college has a foreign language requirement), but you should have a reasonable vocabulary and basic grammar. It probably delivers about as much as you could expect from a software program.

Rosetta stone shows you four pictures at a time and you pick the picture that matches the word or sentence you are learning. If you get the answer right, it scrambles the pictures and asks you the next question, until you get all four correct. It then moves onto the next four pictures.
There is no english used at all on the program. But, the good thing is, you learn spanish pretty quickly, even without any English.
There are many lessons on each level (approx 80), and it takes about a half hour to do each one, if you use the self-guided format. However, you can spend much more on each lesson if you practice typing in spanish, and speaking in spanish with your microphone.
It is multi-media and even lets you practice your pronunciation using a microphone, and it “grades” your speaking, along with your spelling, and comprehension.
I like the product a lot, and use it every other day. You should still get a few inexpensive grammar and phrase books to study in your spare time, to supplement.
