What are some good ways to motivate students to study a foreign language?

tangerine asked:

I work as a Spanish tutor at college. And though I love my job and often find it rewarding, I also get quite frustrated from time to time, because I often have students who don’t take learning the language seriously. Often these students are taking Spanish courses to fulfill a requirement in a degree program and they are usually more focused on passing the courses instead of actually learning the language. Is there any way I can help change their attitudes towards learning a foreign language?

  • How To Learn To Speak Spanish

Make the class a little more fun for them, and have a discussion with them saying that it is important to learn the language. Tell them that passing the class doesn’t matter, learning the language does. If you learn and understand the language, the passing the class part just comes automatically.

Explain to then how this will be benificial in the long run. Not many people would be motivated to learn a language if they didn’t think it would help them. Also if you have a real enthusiasm for the subject then in time they will too because there is nothing better than seeing a teachers zest for something. It makes you think “What is it that they like about it so much?” so it keeps you interested.

use music. i’ve a french teacher and she uses music to teach us. alot of different types of music. we always get excited about it.
when you have used a few times, you should start using it only as a reward after hard work, that way, you get them to get some work done too.

  • How To Learn Spanish Quickly

Use food. People love to eat. If you connect food with the learning it will bloom.

Have the students pick a dish from a region that speaks Spanish. (They all need to be individual and no doubling up).Have them make the dish and bring it in. Have them do a presentation on the dish, describing the process to make it, ingredients and cultural implications of the food. All in Spanish. It works.

  • Easiest Way To Learn Spanish

Someone said something about learning being fun. Your problem is one of teaching and the subject matter will help provide solutions. Do not attempt the lecture thing of use or importance for the future: if they don’t see it right now your sermon won’t help.

On the other hand you have it made. Language is about communication and interaction between people. Challenge them to meet someone in a Spanish forum (Y!A will do), and write up a short profile. After all there are all those beautiful Latino people out there. See what I mean?
